Bio & Statement

Biography

Originally from Adelaide, Australia, Vanessa Brady studied graphic design at the University of South Australia before switching to complete a Fine Art degree after a year abroad seeing the Italian master painters. In 2004 she was the recipient of the Peoples Choice Award in the Annual Art Purchase Prize, and the Helpmann Academy Traveling Grant which she used to visit the Edinburgh International Festival, before relocating permanently to London in 2005.

In 2007 Vanessa founded VJB Arts, an art consultancy set up to help artists exhibit by using the large reception areas of corporate buildings as gallery spaces. The exhibition programme continues and to date, she has curated over 200 exhibitions.

Alongside curating, Vanessa maintains her own artistic practice with group and solo exhibitions in the UK, USA and Australia, including the Affordable Art Fair and Harvey Nichols in London, and she was one of four painters selected to represent Winsor & Newton’s Artist Acrylic Mediums range.

Artist’s Statement

Vanessa’s latest body of work returns to Italy for inspiration in the stunning blue waters of Sardinia where, seduced by colour, she captured a range of photographs of the swirling water and rocks, selecting fragments to laboriously paint on canvas.

Watching water has a meditative quality, light bouncing off form, constant movement and prisms of colour. Focussing on the smallest, detailed abstractions of light, dark, and ‘reflections within reflections’, she has created a semi-abstract quality in paint; a dynamic distortion of nature.
